Presented with one or more self-advocates

Description:

Listening to people who experience intellectual and/or developmental diversity about their experience and exploration of their sexual development is incredibly important. We need to hear their voices; their hopes, dreams, fears, and needs. We need to hear their questions and lived experiences, be open to their differing views and values, and be prepared to support their healthy sexual expressions. This training includes one or more self-advocates sharing from their own experience in addition to facilitated discussions and learning activities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Hear from self-advocates about their experiences of sexuality and relationships

  • Build understanding/awareness of the social-sexual needs of disabled people

  • Learn to listen and respond with openness

  • Counteract abuse, neglect, and sexual exploitation

  • Prevent people with disabilities from ending up in the criminal justice system for behaviors they need education and support around

  • Recognize healthy sexual development and healthy relationships

NOTE: There are additional fees for this training in order to provide stipends to the self-advocate(s) presenting for the training.
