A Starting Point for Real Change… What to Expect from Tier 1: FOUNDATIONS
A Meaningful First Step
Tier 1: FOUNDATIONS is more than a professional training—it’s a reframing of how we think about support, sexuality, and human connection. Launching virtually on September 24, 2025, this three-day course is the first step of the Sexual Self-Determination Certification Program. Whether you're a parent, M/MH clinician, direct support professional, or educator, this training helps you build confidence and competence regarding these sensitive topics.
What You’ll Learn
FOUNDATIONS is divided into four interconnected units, each building upon the prior material:
Unit 1: Understanding the foundations of sexuality, puberty, and skin hunger (our need for nurturing touch)
Unit 2: Exploring how trauma impacts sexual development & expression
Unit 3: Identifying healthy vs. maladaptive behaviors
Unit 4: Designing person-centered, collaborative support strategies
Participants also take part in group and peer-to-peer activities which reinforce the material through community learning.
Who Should Attend?
Initially created for professionals and parents working directly with individuals with intellectual and developmental differences, Tier 1 now serves:
Professionals in medical and mental health
Foster care and long-term care providers
Case managers and educators
Parents, and even those supporting neurotypical youth
A Practical and Invaluable Toolkit
Participants leave with real skills:
Broader understanding of sexuality and sexual self-determination
Tools to assess and support healthy development
Frameworks to collaboratively navigate risks and choices
Trauma-informed insights into behavior
Why It’s Different
Most training programs offer a specific tool, curriculum, or protocol. This one builds your instincts. It teaches you how to assimilate, not just how to apply.
“Other programs will teach you one curriculum, but when you’re working with people with cognitive impairments that curriculum fits some people, but not others.”
FOUNDATIONS focuses on personalization—on crafting supports that meet people where they are, not where we wish they were. Every unit blends learning materials, peer dialogue, and hands-on application to meet all learning styles—whether your preference is visual, verbal, kinesthetic, or a little bit of everything.
“People find it incredibly interactive, exciting and inclusive… it builds a meaningful community and a powerful network in the first three days.”
Professional Growth with Practical Perks
FOUNDATIONS is approved for CEUs in Oregon and Washington and qualifies for 18 Category 1 CME credits and BCBA credits nationwide, making it a strong investment for professionals who need accredited continuing education.
Bottom Line…
Whether you’re here to deepen your skills, meet continuing education requirements, or change the way you support others, Tier 1 is a rare opportunity to do all three.
